I've been comparing these exact two tools (Claude Code and Codex) for the last 2 months in production-like workflows. The head-to-head timing of their releases captures something real: they're optimizing for different philosophies.

Codex won on speed and breadth - scanning large codebases, generating boilerplate fast. Claude won on depth and context retention - understanding architectural decisions, maintaining coherence across multi-step tasks.

What surprised me most: neither dominated. Task type determined the winner. Simple CRUD? Codex. Complex state management? Claude. The choice compounds because your workflow adapts to whichever you pick.

I documented the full comparison with real metrics: https://thoughts.jock.pl/p/claude-code-vs-codex-real-comparison-2026

Key finding: tool choice shapes your development patterns more than capability benchmarks suggest. Curious which one you're betting on for long-horizon tasks?
